Chiles girls finish 2nd at Pre-State Invitational

The Chiles High girls cross country team came up a bit short at the Little Everglades Pre-State Invitational on Saturday in Dade City.

The Timerwolves finished second in the Elite Girls Division, 41 points behind champion Estero High.

Estero won the Class 2A state cross country title last season and have moved up to Class 3A and will be one of Chiles' main challengers for the state title next month on the same course.

"We had a good day, not a great day," Chiles coach Scott Gowan said of the girls' performance. "I told them all along, they are a well-coached team and very talented. You don't beat Estero having a good day. You need to have a great day."

Chiles senior Lily Williams finished second in the race with a time of 17:46, five seconds behind Lakewood Ranch's Olivia Ortiz.
